Kronalux® swimming pool paint is a durable underwater coating based on chlorinated rubber for waterproof mineral substrates such as concrete. It protects and decorates underwater surfaces such as swimming pools and paddling pools, fish ponds and ornamental fountains. The pool paint is highly weather and water resistant and is also resistant to diluted acids and alkalis, salt solutions, ozonated and chlorinated water, and mineral oils. This makes the pool paint perfect for underwater use – especially for constant contact with chlorine. Kronalux® swimming pool paint is available in black, white, capri blue, pastel blue, and sea green.

Preparing the surface of the swimming pool

To ensure that the pool paint lasts, the surface of the pool or swimming pool must be solid, free of grease and oil, dry, and thoroughly cleaned of dirt and dust deposits. In swimming pools, the outer walls must be well insulated against ground moisture and groundwater. Inadequate or poor insulation is usually the cause of blistering and flaking paint. Concrete or cement plaster must be well bonded with the swimming pool paint before painting work begins, i.e., work on the concrete pool should be at least 4-6 weeks old. Concrete or cement plaster must not be smoothed with a steel trowel, but should be rubbed with a felt pad to achieve a non-slip surface. Cement paste and sintered layers must be removed by sandblasting. Substrates such as smooth and mirror plaster can also be roughened by brushing with acidic concrete cleaners, then rinsing thoroughly and allowing to dry. For iron surfaces in swimming pools, such as entry ladders, we recommend priming twice with Kronalit® Epoxy Primer 819 on a well-derusted, load-bearing substrate (sandblast if necessary).

Filling

Ardex GmbH products have proven themselves for filling work. ARDEX A46 has proven to be the most durable solution for walls, while ARDEX K301 is best for floors. For floors, the substrate must be primed with ARDEX EP 2000 and then evenly sanded with ARDEX QS quartz sand. Please contact the manufacturer if you have any further questions. Fillers must not be elastic (such as mineral sealing slurries) or water-swellable, as this can lead to osmosis blisters and/or cracks.

Coating structure with swimming pool paint

Stir the pool paint well before use! Then treat the paint with a thinner: 1 part Kronalux® swimming pool paint diluted with 10% special thinner 97. After 24 hours in dry weather: 1 part Kronalux® swimming pool paint 780CC, undiluted. At least one additional coat is necessary for the color white.

Overcoatability of swimming pool paint

Chlorinated rubber paints set quickly but cure slowly. It is therefore necessary to apply thin coats of paint. The pool paint can be overcoated after 24 hours in dry weather, otherwise longer.

Touch-up work

Coating old swimming pools with swimming pool paint

Refurbishment coatings for pool and swimming pool coatings require particularly thorough cleaning of the substrate to remove algae, dirt, and deposits. Remove lime deposits and algae growth thoroughly with a standard descaler before applying the pool paint. Rinse carefully with plenty of water! Greasy deposits can be removed with standard alkaline swimming pool cleaners or similar products before coating the swimming pool. Remove poorly adhering paint. Repair damaged plaster and allow to dry thoroughly. Prime repainted areas and colorless surfaces with Kronalux® swimming pool paint, diluted to 10%. For renovation, apply Kronalux® swimming pool paint only once in a thin coat (undiluted). The maximum layer thickness is reached after 2-3 renovation coats. Additional coats of pool paint and excessive application may cause blistering. A thick layer of old paint in pools, swimming pools, or fish tanks will prolong the drying time.

Care and winterization of swimming pools

Grease stains can be removed with alkaline cleaning agents, lime deposits with descalers; rinse thoroughly with water! Large pools should preferably be filled for winter storage, using straw, brushwood, or reeds to protect the pool walls from the pressure of ice. In severe frost, the ice cover should be sawn open along the edge of the pool at regular intervals to allow air to circulate. Small pools are best left empty during winter storage.
