Substrate preparation
The substrate must be dry and free of rust, scale, oil, grease, and other contaminants; remove loose paint if necessary. Borax residues must be completely removed from brazed joints. Old paint must be sanded down. Degrease aluminum with nitro thinner before coating.
Galvanized surfaces (BFS data sheet no. 5): Corrosion products, grease, and other contaminants must be thoroughly removed. For the preparation of zinc surfaces, pretreatment with diluted sal ammoniac in combination with wetting agents has proven effective. Add ½ liter of sal ammoniac and approx. 8 cc (1 tablespoon) of wetting agent, e.g., dishwashing liquid, Pril, etc., to 10 liters of water. water, add ½ liter of sal ammoniac and approx. 8 cc (1 tablespoon) of wetting agent, e.g., dishwashing liquid, Pril, etc. Using this mixture and a plastic fleece (e.g., Scotch Pritt from 3M Company), sand the surface until the foam turns metallic gray. Allow the foam to act on the surface for approx. 10 minutes. Then rinse with clean water and dry. Light reworking with a sandblaster has also proven effective.
